Better DJ transitions, one fault at a time.

Advice about transitions usually arrives as vibes: make it smoother, tell a story, read the room. Useful eventually, useless tonight. A blend can only fail in a small number of ways, and each of them has a different sound, a different cause and a different fix.

The four faults

Every one of these is independent. A blend can be perfectly beatmatched and still be a bass clash, and a key clash with the melody EQ’d out can be completely fine. Diagnose before you fix.

Tempo drift

8 points per BPM beyond a 0.5 BPM grace
Sounds like
The two kicks separate slowly over the blend, from one thump into a doubled slap and eventually into two different grooves.
Caused by
The pitch faders are not actually matched, or one record does not hold its tempo. The BPM readout rounds, so a display match is not a real match.
Fix
Ride the pitch. Correct in small moves, then re-nudge for phase. On long blends expect to correct more than once.

Beat clash

up to 25 points
Sounds like
A constant flam that never resolves. The tempos are right but every kick lands slightly early or late, or the whole track is a beat out of phase.
Caused by
Dropped on the wrong beat, or cued to a beat that is not the first of the bar. Also happens when software beatgrids sit off the actual transient.
Fix
Nudge the platter or jog until the kicks fuse into one. If the phrasing feels wrong rather than the beat, you are a bar out, not a beat out.

Key clash

10 points at two steps, 22 at three or more
Sounds like
Nothing rhythmic is wrong, but the overlap sounds sour or tense. Usually the basslines or the pads are in disagreement.
Caused by
The two tracks sit far apart on the Camelot wheel. Two steps is tense, three or more is a genuine clash.
Fix
Choose a closer key, cut the melodic content out of one track with the EQ, or keep the overlap short enough that no two melodies sound together.

Bass clash

6 points per decibel beyond 1 dB of overlap
Sounds like
The low end turns to mud and loses definition. The mix suddenly feels loud but weak, and the kick stops punching.
Caused by
Two basslines playing at once. Sub frequencies from different tracks sum unpredictably and eat all the headroom.
Fix
Swap the bass. Kill the low end on the incoming track before you bring it in, then trade: incoming bass up as outgoing bass comes down, in one motion.

Length changes which fault matters

A transition under about four seconds is a cut. Phase matters, tempo barely does, and a key clash almost never registers because nothing overlaps long enough to sound together. Cuts are the cheapest way out of a difficult pairing, and they are underused.

Between four and thirty seconds you are in blend territory. Every fault is now in play, and bass clash becomes the most likely one, because two low ends are overlapping while your attention is on the beat.

Past thirty seconds it is a long blend, and tempo drift dominates. Anything that would take a minute to become audible now has a minute. This is the region where riding the pitch stops being optional.

Fix them in this order

One: phase and tempo. They are 30 percent of a MixScore for a reason. A room forgives a strange key change. It does not forgive two kicks. Start on the beatmatching drill.

Two: the bass swap. It is one habit, it takes an evening to build, and it removes the muddiest twenty seconds of most amateur sets. Cut the incoming low end before the fader moves, not after.

Three: key. Worth 20 percent, and largely solved during preparation rather than performance. The Camelot chart removes the bad options before you are standing behind the decks.

Four: shape. Where the peak sits, whether the middle sags. This is set design, not a hand skill, and it is the last thing to worry about while individual blends are still failing.

One transition per session

The fastest way to stop improving is to review a whole hour and come away with a general feeling. Take one transition instead. Find the worst scoring blend in a recorded set, work out which of the four faults it was, then play the passage back and listen for exactly that fault. Repeat tomorrow with a different one.

The point of a score is not the score. It is that it points at a timestamp, and a timestamp is something you can practise.
